Scarred Women Series
I have been working on a series of ceramic sculptures titled "Scarred Women". This series represents the struggles that women face every day. These struggles are what I believe shape us and make us into stronger women. I intend to show my audience that although some of our struggles are physical, emotional, and mental. I believe all women, no matter what color, race, ethnicity, social status, educational accomplishments; all have scars from these struggles.
I began this series by thinking about my struggles as a woman and as a mother working in corporate America. I first began to look at all of the women in my family and those around me and how they behave and cope with society. I believe our scars show the physical wear and tear of our daily lives and yet, women are still required to handle the responsibilities of their families and careers. It is because of these responsibilities that women overshadow their scars with make-up and other superficial things.
I convey these scars in my work by using glazes that show imperfections in the skin, paint to portray the make-up we use daily, wire to show what binds and bends our lives in a manner that can have a hold over us, and ink to show the branding of the body. I believe these elements allow me to convey my message of the true story of women.
